Google Ads for SaaS Companies and the B2B SaaS Budget That Pays Back

A US software click costs about $9 and a lead from people who have never heard of you about $207. Below is the budget a fair test needs, the price point where it pays back, and a fixed price place to sit in front of the same buyers from $24 a month.

No bids and no daily budget. A listing goes live as soon as the payment clears.

The short answer

Google Ads for SaaS costs about $9.26 a click and $92 a lead for US B2B accounts when brand and non-brand search are blended. Non-brand search, where buyers who do not know you yet find you, runs $13.75 a click and $207 a lead. A test that produces 30 leads therefore needs about $6,000, and it pays back within a year for products priced from roughly $250 a month.

Those figures are medians from 53+ B2B SaaS accounts managed by PipeRocket over July 2025 to June 2026. Search ads stop the day the budget stops. A listing here keeps your product next to 241 tools across 35 categories for $24 a month billed annually, and a featured week costs $299, so it is the steady base line to run beside a search test.

How much do Google Ads cost for SaaS by campaign type?

The campaign type changes cost per lead more than anything else you control. Search is where most SaaS budgets should start, because the person typed the problem. The cheaper types look good in a dashboard and need stricter tracking before they earn a budget line.

Campaign type Cost per click Click to lead Cost per lead What it is good for
Search $11.02 3.27%
$143
People typing a problem or a category. The core of most SaaS accounts.
Performance Max $0.75 6.53%

Display $0.68 0.30%
$219

SMB SaaS

$87 to $200 a lead

Self serve and small team products with short trials.

Mid market SaaS

$200 to $900 a lead

Demo led products sold to departments of 50 to 1,000 staff.

Enterprise SaaS

$1,500 to $4,500 a lead

Long sales cycles where one deal pays for a year of ads.

How much budget do Google Ads need for a SaaS test?

Google Ads has no minimum spend. You set an average daily budget; Google may spend up to twice that on a busy day and evens it out so the month never passes 30.4 times the daily figure. That flexibility is exactly why small tests fail: $20 a day buys about 44 non-brand clicks a month and one or two leads.

Plan the test around leads instead of days. Twenty to thirty leads is the smallest batch that tells you whether they book demos or start trials. At the non-brand median that is $4,140 to $6,210, spread over four to six weeks. Brand search is far cheaper at $34 a lead, but a young product has little brand demand to buy, so it cannot carry the test on its own.

Most small businesses start at $1,000 to $2,500 a month. For a SaaS company that usually means one tight Search campaign on bottom of funnel terms ("category software for audience", "competitor alternative") rather than five thin campaigns that each learn nothing. Leads that sit for a day go cold; if nobody can phone them within the hour, AI cold calling that qualifies leads can make the first call for you.

Are Google Ads worth it for SaaS?

It depends on what one customer is worth. Assume one non-brand lead in ten pays, a fair figure for a trial or demo led product. At $207 a lead that is about $2,070 of ad spend per customer. The table shows how many months of revenue it takes to earn that back.

Product price Revenue a year Months to earn back $2,070 Verdict
$50 a month self serve $600 41 Does not pay back on non-brand search
$250 a month team plan $3,000 8.3 Worth a test
$1,000 a month mid market $12,000 2.1 Worth a test
$30,000 a year enterprise $30,000 0.8 Worth a test

Assumes a 10% lead to customer rate and the non-brand median cost per lead. Measure your own close rate in the first month.

The same arithmetic on LinkedIn, where the median lead costs $376, is in LinkedIn ads for SaaS, and the Meta version is in Facebook ads for SaaS. Self serve products under $100 a month usually do better starting where buyers already compare tools.

Four steps to a Google Ads test that gives an answer

1

Track trials, not forms

Import trial starts or qualified demos as the conversion. Optimizing on raw form fills teaches Google to find people who never pay.

2

Bid on buying words

Category plus audience, "best X for Y", pricing and competitor alternative terms. Add negatives for free, template, jobs and login.

3

One page per intent

Send each ad group to a page that answers that exact search. A homepage converts the fewest of every option.

4

Decide at 30 leads

Write the cost per customer you can afford before launch, then keep, fix or stop when the 30th lead arrives.

Google Ads next to a fixed price listing

The most expensive SaaS keywords are the ones where a buyer compares products: "notion alternatives", "best CRM for small business", "competitor pricing". A listing puts your product on our alternatives pages and category comparisons, which serve that same comparison intent. Google reaches far more searchers and scales with budget. Here is the honest split.

Google Ads Search SoftwareHome Listing SoftwareHome featured week
How you pay Per click, auction priced $24 a month billed annually, or $49 monthly $299 flat for seven days
Typical month $1,000 to $2,500 to start $24 $299 for the week you choose
Reach Everyone searching your keywords, as far as budget goes Buyers browsing your category and competitors' alternatives pages here Top of those pages for the week
When the money stops Ads stop the same day Live for the paid period Returns to a normal listing
Best for Products from about $250 a month with a tested landing page Any SaaS that wants a permanent spot where buyers compare A launch, a pricing change or a new feature week

Google Ads for SaaS questions

How much do Google Ads cost for SaaS?

For B2B SaaS accounts in the US, a click costs about $9.26 and a lead about $92 when brand and non-brand search are blended. Non-brand search, where new buyers find you, runs about $13.75 a click and $207 a lead. Most SaaS companies spend $1,000 to $2,500 a month to start.

Are Google Ads worth it for SaaS?

They are worth it when a customer is worth more than roughly $2,000 in the first year and your landing page converts. At $207 per non-brand lead and one lead in ten paying, each customer costs about $2,070. A $250 a month plan earns that back in about eight months; a $50 plan never does.

What is a good CPC for SaaS?

Across 53+ managed B2B SaaS accounts, the median blended CPC was $6.81 and US accounts paid $9.26. Under $5 is strong for non-brand software keywords; competitive categories such as HR tech or security often pass $10. Judge CPC only next to conversion rate, because a cheap click that never signs up costs more.

What is the minimum budget for Google Ads?

Google Ads has no minimum spend. You set an average daily budget, Google may spend up to twice that on a busy day, and the month is capped at 30.4 times the daily figure. A SaaS test needs enough budget for 20 to 30 leads, which is about $4,000 to $6,000 on non-brand search.

Should SaaS companies bid on competitor names?

Often yes, because people searching a competitor name plus "alternative" are close to buying. Google allows trademarks as keywords, but the owner can restrict their use in your ad text. Expect higher CPCs and lower click through than on your own brand, and send those clicks to a page that compares the two products honestly.

Is Performance Max good for B2B SaaS?

Performance Max reports the cheapest leads, a median $25 against $143 for Search, but much of that volume comes from display and video placements with weaker intent. Run it only with conversion tracking on trials or qualified demos, not on raw form fills, or it will optimize toward cheap leads that never buy.
