What an AlternativeTo listing does for a B2B SaaS
AlternativeTo is organized around one question: what can I use instead of the tool I have now. Every product has a page listing its alternatives, and those pages rank in Google for searches like "Asana alternative" or "apps like Notion". The person reading them is already unhappy with a competitor, which makes them some of the warmest free traffic a young SaaS can get.
The listing itself is modest. You get a profile with a description, platforms, license, screenshots and a link to your site. The value is in the pages that are not yours: each competitor you name becomes a page where you can appear, ranked by users.
How do I get my software listed on AlternativeTo?
Create the account first, ideally with an address on your product's domain, and let it age seven days. Likes do most of the work. When a user marks your product as a good alternative to Trello, you move up the Trello page. AlternativeTo also uses signals it keeps private so the lists are harder to game. A new listing with zero likes starts at the bottom, often below the fold on a long page.
The honest way up is to ask customers who genuinely switched. An email to people who told you they came from a competitor, with a direct link to that competitor's AlternativeTo page, works better than a general "support us" post. Do not offer discounts or gifts for votes and do not create accounts: AlternativeTo demotes or removes products that do.
Comments and reviews on your listing are moderated before they appear, and they show up weeks after you stop checking. A brand monitoring tool that watches the web for your product name will catch a complaint on a directory page before it sits unanswered for a month.
Is an AlternativeTo backlink worth anything?
Do not list for the link. AlternativeTo does not promise a link attribute, and independent trackers disagree on whether it is followed. Its domain is strong, but a single profile link will not move your rankings. What the listing does reliably is send visitors who are mid switch, and give AI assistants one more independent page that names you next to the tools you compete with.
